Every year we invest in Microsoft; leveraging a wide array of different Azure services, which enables us to deliver this knowledge to our clients. This investment means we’re able to innovate and continually improve as Microsoft Gold partner. With this innovation and learning we can guide our partners in delivering their strategic objectives whilst remaining in budget.

Microsoft Azure can help you

Like everything in life there is generally a budget and it’s no different with your Azure services. We all like to keep the finance department happy so here are our top tips to help:

Switching Azure regions

Azure pricing varies from one region to another, even in Europe. Double check the pricing in various regions to see if you what you can save. As an example, we typically find West Europe is around 5% cheaper than UK South.

Get free money from Microsoft by working with Atech

If you have a digital transformation project to move to Azure, you can get discounts to help incentivise and pay for a Microsoft partner to assist making it happen. At Atech we have already secured this funding to help existing and new partners transition to the cloud.

Choose the right CSP provider

By partnering with an Azure expert, they can bring all their experience and knowledge providing continuous recommendations.  One of the benefits of public cloud is the continuation of the development of services and new feature releases. Selecting the right partner who have their finger on the pulse and can show you where you can make ongoing platform improvements is really a no-brainer.

Use auto-scaling to reduce costs during off hours

Most businesses have busier and slower periods throughout a week or day. Take advantage of auto-scaling built into Azure to save some money during slow periods.

These deployment types all support auto-scaling:

  • Cloud Services
  • App Services
  • VM Scale Sets (Including Batch, Service Fabric, Container Service)

Scaling could also mean shutting your app down completely. Some services have a feature called AlwaysOn that controls if the app should shut down due to no activity. You could also schedule shutting down your dev/QA servers with something like DevTest Labs.

Test and Dev Environments

You’re delivering more features faster – keeping up with a comprehensive set of development and testing tools for your business to collaborate and deliver at cloud speed can be difficult. Microsoft allow you to have a test and dev subscription that can save up to 40% on services through separating these in to a separate subscription.

Governance and Accountability in the cloud

Drive organisational accountability, implement governance policies for effective enterprise cloud cost management and increase accountability with cost allocation and chargebacks. That may sound like a lot of long words crammed into one sentence but setting up a simple but effective governance framework is a must when moving to public cloud.

Monitor cloud spend

Track resource usage and manage cloud costs across all your clouds with a single unified view, while accessing rich operational and financial insights to make informed decisions. Break down and analyse costs to identify anomalies and gain a deeper understanding of cost and usage patterns. Create a budget to control costs and configure alerts to warn teams about impending budget overages.

Optimise cloud efficiency

Improve the return on your cloud investment by using continuous cost optimisation and industry best practices. Optimise to identify unused or underutilised resources. Act to reduce waste and deliver true value from public cloud.

New Azure cold storage option

Azure now offers warm and cold Azure storage. Warm is designed for data that is used frequently and cold is for data that is rarely used. If you have a lot of data that is hardly used, backups, archives, or other data, be sure to check out cold storage.

Use Azure PaaS features

Leveraging Azure for virtual machines and IaaS is fine, but you are missing out on a lot of opportunities to reduce management costs and lower Azure costs as a whole. Unless you have a really, good reason to use SQL in a VM. At Atech, we leverage every PaaS feature of Azure we can, showing you a benefit.
